How Often Should You Really Clean your Air Conditioner?

  • Air Conditioning

Your air conditioner's performance gets seriously affected by how clean it is. And while you do have service schedules for it, there is some maintenance you can and should do on your own in between these service intervals. This will have a positive impact on the performance of your air conditioner and also on your electricity bills.

Our team of experts here at Banhams always recommend our customers to take care of the condition of their ACs by keeping them clean. We recommend doing an annual AC service as an important part of keeping your HVAC system in good condition. But what can you do on your own? Keep reading!

Change the Filters

Changing your air filter is definitely one of the easier ways to keep the air conditioning unit running in an optimum manner. We recommend regularly changing the air conditioning filters.

Dirty air filters can obstruct the normal airflow of your AC. This will make your system less efficient, having a negative impact on the cooling costs.

Moreover, dirty filters can carry dirt into the evaporator coil, preventing the air conditioner from sensing the temperatures properly. A high-end filter has a life of 6 months and after that it does need to be changed.  You might have to change it more frequently during the summer months because of increased usage.

Clean the Coils

The condenser and evaporator coils of your air conditioner will accumulate some dirt over time. This is why it is important to clean the coils frequently to remove any of this debris, encouraging proper airflow and unit functioning.
If you keep changing the filter with a regular interval, you will prevent dirt from accumulating on the coils. Having said this, they will still gather some dirt over time. You might be living in a dustier environment, meaning you will have to clean coils more frequently.

Deep Clean the Unit

To keep your AC running smoothly, you can perform a deep clean on the system in regular intervals. Deep cleaning your air conditioner can do some serious wonders for your unit. Turn off the unit and clean it thoroughly using a vacuum cleaner and a soft bristle brush attachment to get rid from the AC’s exterior.

Be extremely gentle and careful when vacuuming the fins as they are very delicate and prone to bending. Next, remove the top grille and the fan. Taking a hose, spray the fin from inside to clean out any debris that might be in there. Replace the fan. You’ll see the difference instantly!

Following these tips will keep your AC in a good shape while you wait for the next service. How frequently you do all of these depends on your house, the location as well as the usage.
